What’s a design principle that is sometimes overlooked when creating a new house?
by Jean Rehkamp Larson, AIA / Partner
Throughout the year, light orients us each day. A new house can be thoughtfully sited and designed to take advantage of the way lights moves from morning to afternoon. Are you a morning person that loves to be woken by eastern light? Do you want your screen porch on the west to catch the last lights of the day?
When a house has wings, rooms can easily have windows on two sides. Windows along hallways lead you through the space. Consider wrapping the house around a courtyard garden — this outdoor room will capture and bounce light back into your home in delightful, unexpected ways.
