More than 25 years ago, Jean Rehkamp Larson and Mark Larson collaborated on their first joint project while both were still working for different architecture firms. Mark’s parents asked them to renovate / redesign the Larson family cabin, and they jumped at the chance to collaborate. Not long after, they took another leap and created Rehkamp Larson Architects.
From Mpls. St. Paul Home & Design Magazine‘s recent article on Lake Legacy, the family cabin:
“Architectural firms often develop a design ethos over time. But for Rehkamp Larson Architects, that idea—what Jean Rehkamp and Mark Larson now call functional beauty—took shape in their first project together.”
Look for functional beauty all over this cabin, from Mark’s grandpa’s skis on the living room wall to snowshoes and tools as wall art. This ethos applies to materials as well, with use of plywood in the recently remodeled basement and old bunkhouse.
“‘It’s that idea of modest materials put together in an elegant way,’ Rehkamp says.”
“Now, more than 25 years later, the firm they founded together builds on ideas first tested here, where honest materials and an emphasis on shared experiences continue to shape the firm’s work.”
