This year’s winning projects: Kenwood Refresh and a project detail we call The Cube. Mpls. St. Paul Magazine created the RAVE Awards (Residential Architects Vision & Excellence) to showcase architectural excellence in the Twin Cities. The Cube: This unique custom white oak cabinet serves as a mudroom in a box, sitting at a crossroads in a link between garage and main house in a Pacific Northwest home. The hand-crafted and delightful art piece conceals a dog kennel, an electronics charging station, plus hidden drawers and hatches for storing keys, sunglasses, hats and gloves. All doors and drawers are touch latch, operating without pulls or knobs, to completely clean up the look and keep a tidy profile. Cabinet work by John Frost.
Kenwood Refresh: A family with three growing teenagers wanted more functionality in their stately 1931 Kenwood, Minneapolis home. The roomy and formal front entrance isn’t on the everyday route from the garage — the preferred, tight back entrance had become a pile of shoes. The kitchen felt cramped and closed off, and a previous kitchen remodel with a barrel-vaulted ceiling seemed out of step with the style of the home. No new square footage was added in the renovation, rather, the spaces were carefully reimagined, taking inspiration from the home’s original details. Read more
