Tradition Restored
Over the decades, this 1930s Edina home had undergone a series of additions and exterior alterations, leaving behind a patchwork of styles and proportions that felt disconnected from the character of the original house. Drawn to its location and potential, the new owners saw an opportunity to update the home while restoring its charm.
To better support their everyday routines and times of hosting, the interior was thoughtfully reworked. Room relationships and layouts were refined, new built-in cabinetry and millwork were introduced throughout, and a consistent material palette was carried across the spaces – creating a renewed sense of continuity between the original home and its additions.
On the main level, a refreshed kitchen and two pantries provide much-needed storage and gathering space. Tweaks to the existing great room addition provide textures, dimension, and warmth to a large space craving attention. Added detailing to supporting rooms creates cohesion throughout the spaces.
Upstairs, refreshed bedrooms and bathrooms comfortably accommodate family and friends. The reconfigured owners’ suite now includes a generous bathroom, walk-in closet, and a sunroom bathed in natural light.
The lower level was reimagined as an entertainment destination drawing inspiration from an Irish pub. Dark paints and tiles; walnut cabinetry and doors; brick walls; an antiqued mirror; tartan carpet; and a brass bottle storage feature wall help to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
The exterior completes this transformation, restoring much of the home’s historic character. Taking cues from historic images of the property, existing oversized trim was replaced with appropriately scaled detailing; beadboard and battens were introduced at soffits; and rooflines, columns, and brackets were returned to more historically accurate proportions. As the home approaches its centennial, this thoughtful renovation has helped it to feel at home once again within its historic context.
